“During El Nino we have the droughts in western Pacific counties, like Indonesia and Australia,” says Dr Wenju Cai, a senior principal research scientist at CSIRO Wealth from Oceans Flagship.

“But in other places — like Ecuador and Peru — these normally dry areas suddenly get a lot of rain.

“In the US, in California they experience flooding during El Nino events.”

An El Nino can also bring warmer temperatures for the whole planet by about 0.1 to 0.2 degrees.

Victoria is already dealing with the extremely dry conditions as a result of the El Nino.

But the El Nino isn’t the only weather phenomena with the potential to impact Australia. Record warm temperatures in the Indian Ocean are being observed, as they could bring more rainfall to parts of Australia.

The BoM has predicted a wetter than usual summer across south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales.

The BoM said a strong El Nino in the Pacific was likely to persist well into 2016.

“The El Nino influence on Australian rainfall is variable at this time of year, with both wetter and drier summers observed in the past depending on how quickly the El Nino event breaks down,” the climate statement read.
